Fenwick Ont.- The Fabulous Fenwick Lions Club is saddened to announce that Fenwick Flossie has been cancelled again this year.
For some 25 years, Fenwick Flossie is aroused from her long winter slumber on Groundhog’s Day by the ruckus cheers of school children from 3 local schools. The children would eagerly await with anticipation of Flossie’s annual prediction of an “Early Spring or the dreaded 6 more weeks of winter”. After Flossie has completed her ceremonial dance to find her weather-predicting shadow she gets to mingle with the kids as they enjoy a cup of hot cholate provided by the Fabulous Fenwick Lions Club.
This is the 2nd year in a row that Flossie has side-lined herself as covid precautions has made the annual pilgrimage to Centennial Park a no-go.
Without the beaming smiling faces of some 200 kids from JK to grade 3 to egg her on, Flossie is unwilling to perform her meteorological duties. Even though our records show that Flossie seems to be just as accurate as her smaller counterparts. She just gives us the look that says’s “I do it for the kids!”
To cheer Flossie up and to coax her out of her den, the Fenwick Lions Club has decided to donate the funds that were allocated for the event to the Niagara Humane Society to benefit Flossie’s furry friends. Flossie herself will be presenting the cheque to Tyler from the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society at 10 am Groundhogs Day from the steps of the Fenwick Lions Club, 999 Church St. Fenwick.
HAPPY GROUNDHOGS’ DAY!!
